Traceable calibration VS Accredited calibration

Traceable calibration is a calibration performed using standards traceable to national or international measurement standards. Meaning that the calibration results can be reliably related to the International System of Units (SI). Traceability is important for ensuring the accuracy and reliability of measurements. They are performed according to written SOP by a trained professional.

Accredited calibration is a calibration performed by a laboratory that has been accredited by an accreditation body. Accreditation is a formal process that assesses the laboratory’s technical competence and compliance with an international standard, such as ISO/IEC 17025:2017.
An accredited calibration certificate provides evidence that the calibration was performed by a competent laboratory and ensures the reliability of the results.

Standards that support traceable calibration:

  • ISO/IEC 17025:2017 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories

  • ISO 9001:2015 Quality management systems – Requirements

  • ISO/IEC Guide 98-3:2008 Uncertainty of measurement – Part 3: Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM:1995)

Standards that support accredited calibration:

  • ISO/IEC 17025:2017 General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories

  • ISO/IEC 17011:2017 Conformity assessment – General requirements for accreditation bodies accrediting conformity assessment bodies

A calibration laboratory can provide both traceable and accredited services. It is not necessary for the laboratory to be accredited in all parameters to provide traceable calibration.

In cases where accredited calibration is not available in the lab of a calibration service provider, traceable calibration can still be a good option. Traceable calibration can ensure that your measurements are accurate and reliable, even if the laboratory is not accredited.
